Back to Basics.

I would like to take a moment to look at the Declaration of Independence. Two passages in particular are either overlooked, misunderstood, or in the case of politicians, intentionally re-written to suit a particular political ideology.

First: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Our founders, first and foremost, believed that our rights were endowed to us by God. These rights were so fundamental that they could not be taken away by any act of man. They were given to us by God as a birthright. With the systematic removal of God from our government comes this danger; if God is no longer the authority that issued us our rights than our rights are given by another authority, man. What God gives us no man can take from us, what man gives us man can take from us. It may seem like a matter of semantics but take a moment to think why it has become so important to remove God from government. As a foot note you will notice that we are endowed with a right to the pursuit of happiness, not a right to happiness. Socialism is obsessed with equal results, democracy with equal opportunity. It is the difference that separates the two. No one is guaranteed success at the expense of another. Socialism does not work and history is replete with examples. Do not fall for the argument.

Second: But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security

This part of the Declaration of Independence is a call to action. It means that when Government no longer works in the interest of the governed, it is the duty of the governed to take action to change government. Our government no longer works in our interests. It is our duty to act, to do those things that force our government to subjugate themselves to our will not the other way around. In the time of the founders that action was revolution. I do not advocate revolution per se, but a revolution at the ballot box. We have to hold out elected representatives accountable. If we do not force them to change they will not change and we will suffer the slings and arrows of their outrageous fortune. The biggest weapon in out arsenal is education. Read, understand and take action.
